Why fear God?

I grew up under the shepherding of several Fire & Brimstone preachers where fearing God was foremost on my mind every Sunday.

If I wasn’t afraid of God before service, I certainly was afterward. Raised voices from the pulpit. Accusing tones and harsh words painted a frightening picture of God.

Let me be clear: the preaching I described was many, many, many years ago, and I was a little girl who listened with my emotions. Over time and choosing a more intimate relationship with Father, my understanding of fear is completely different.

Truth is, unless we reverently fear the Lord

—Wisdom will elude us.

—We will not know peace.

—We will always be victims.

—We will not know true salvation.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10 NIV

This fear is not scary; it’s a deep, gut-wrenching understanding of how utterly amazing our Creator’s love is for us.

We are not accidents.
We are not without purpose.
We are designed for much.
We are highly valued.
We are welcome.
We are His.

The key to knowing how much the Holy One “knows you intimately,” is to seek Him with all of your heart.

There’s no secret code, no magical prayer, no ritual to go through —truly, God loves you enough to meet you right where you are.

Is there a call rising up in your heart? Answer it.
Cry out to the Holy Spirit of Christ.
He’s listening.

Share with Him the things that are tearing you up inside.
He understands.

Ask Him to change the desires of your heart.
He’s made a Way.

Open a Bible. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you in your reading.

A new day dawns where fear is replaced by a yearning to understand more.
That’s why we fear God.

Let’s journey together

Heavenly Father, how majestic is Your name?
Guide my heart, O Lord, to a deeper level of understanding.
Remove unwarranted fear and replace it with true reverence.
Help me to see Your glory with spiritual eyes.
I praise You.
I love You.
To You, I give all honor and glory.
Amen.

Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves; do what it says. James 1:22

May YHWH bless you, keep you, and guide you in all you do. Until next time, this is Linda Goldfarb, and I’m so glad we are on this journey together with Father.
